Stromatolite

Some of the world's first organisms were microscopic cyanobacteria. During the Precambrian era cyanobacteria generated large quantities of oxygen by a process of photosynthesis. Periods of high and low photosynthetic activity by the cyanobacteria produce a striped limestone known as stromatolite. The majority of stromatolite was created during the mid-Proterozoic era.
