Chert

Chert is a sedimentary rock composed of very fine quartz that comes in a variety of colors: black, red, green, or white. It has a high silica content, which makes it very hard and highly valued for stone tools. Bedded chert is composed of layers of chert, several cm thick, alternating with layers of mudstone 1 to 2mm thick.
