Banded Iron Formations

Banded iron formations are rocks made of alternating sedimentary layers of chert and oxidized iron. Worldwide, 90% of iron is found in banded iron formations, many of which were formed between 1.9 and 2.6 billion years ago. The gemstone 'tiger's eye' is only found in banded iron formations.
